Management
Mediation business was brisk
throughout this summer and our mediators have been engaged nearly every week
since the spring, helping businesses and individuals to find ways forward in
many difficult situations. These include:
|
Renewable energy project Planning applications Infrastructure schemes Construction contracts Public private partnership issues Share purchase and business acquisition Taxation on receivership Corporate banking recovery |
Client relationships in professional services Management in organisations Agricultural partnership arrangements Corporate restructuring Alleged professional negligence by architects Damages claim for personal injury and loss of
property Partnership cessation |
We have been encouraged by
the increased awareness in Government, the public sector and in business as
more and more organisations and individuals turn to mediation as an early means
to sort out differences.
Speaking at conferences on
Public Sector Budgets and the Future of Scotland post devolution (John Sturrock
chaired a conference, “Scotland Ten Years On”, at which both the First Minister
and the Secretary of State for Scotland were the keynote speakers: see Core in
the Press below) has helped to raise the profile of mediation in both the
public and private sectors.
John Sturrock was the keynote
speaker at both the launch in London in early October of the RICS Mediation
Panel and at a conference arranged by Planning Aid in Edinburgh. This comes on
the back of Scotland’s leadership in this field following Core’s preparation of
the Guide to the Use of Mediation in the planning system.
The Guide is available at http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2009/03/10154116/0
We continue to benefit from
the enormous success of William Ury’s visit to Edinburgh in June. Scotland’s Futures
Forum did us proud at the Scottish Parliament with a very well attended opening
event for Dr Ury’s visit. A DVD is now available of the Conversation between Dr
Ury and John Sturrock at our subsequent dinner attended by nearly 80 people.
The success of the all-day
master class event at The Hub, attended by over 100 participants, is marked by
the fact that hundreds of Dr Ury’s books are now circulating in Scotland.
Contact us if you wish a copy of the DVD or one of
the books.
Mediating
Dangerously: The Frontiers of Conflict Resolution
Friday 13 November 2009 –
register now
Last December, we were
honoured to welcome Kenneth Cloke, President and co-founder of Mediators
Beyond Borders and Director of the Center for Dispute Resolution, to Edinburgh.
He left a deep impression on his audiences and gave us all with much to think
about.
Now we have a great
opportunity to hear Ken again.
“I have been left with an
overwhelming feeling that I was part of something very special indeed! Ken is
an amazing person – great teacher, educator, motivator – and passionate about
Mediation and Conflict Resolution.”
“What a brilliant
couple of days in Edinburgh with Ken Cloke. How totally inspiring.”
William Ury says this of
Ken Cloke’s writing:
“Ken Cloke pushes us think
beyond the conventional boundaries of conflict resolution. ……His ideas are
dangerous. Read him at your own risk – and the reward is great!”

Mediators Beyond Borders (www.mediatorsbeyondborders.org), of which Ken Cloke is President, is the only
dispute resolution organisation with non-observer status at the vital summit
talks on climate change (COP 15) in Copenhagen in December, which has been
described as “the most important date in the history of humanity”. Mediators
from around the globe will meet together to press for inclusion of mediation in
the protocols for resolution of disputes arising in connection with the impact
of climate change.

gathering in Copenhagen. Please contact John
Sturrock (who will be attending) if you wish to discuss.

Pamela Lyall writes:
Sarah Blake, a young
Australian mediator came to Scotland in early 2009 with a view to sharing ideas
and experiences with mediators in Scotland and in particular inspiring young
mediators to “get out there and just do it!” She has spent the past six years
working in the field of conflict resolution, management and cross-cultural
engagement, most recently within remote Aboriginal Communities in Northern Australia
and has some fascinating case studies from this work.
In March, in association with
the Young Mediators’ Group, Core arranged a discussion event with her at which
she gave a talk on her own personal reflections as a cross-cultural mediator,
entitled “Cross Cultural Mediation & Conflict Management: A Bridge
Between”.
