How do we follow up William Ury and Kenneth Cloke? By doing something different!

In June, we welcome the internationally recognised author, practitioner and observer of the legal scene, Dr Julie Macfarlane of the Faculty of Law, University of Windsor, Ontario.

Her acclaimed latest book, The New Lawyer – How Settlement is Transforming the Practice of Law, has made a real impact across the globe. In it, she discusses how settlement is transforming legal practice. She argues that the profession globally has to change as the needs and aspirations of clients change. See www.thenewlawyer.org.

“The New Lawyer presents the most compelling case for the legal profession to change to come along in decades. Macfarlane convincingly replaces the old paradigm of the lawyer as warrior with a new perspective on what zealous advocacy truly is to clients – solving a problem through conflict resolution advocacy.”   (Kathy Bryan, President and CEO, CPR: International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution)

Julie Macfarlane advocates a settlement-oriented, problem-solving approach to lawyering. Conflict resolution rather than protracted litigation will become the norm. She explores the impact of this on lawyer-client relationships, the legal system, ethics, legal advice, advocacy, negotiation, professional identity and lawyers’ skills generally. For Julie Macfarlane, the New Lawyer represents not so much a rejection of traditions, but rather, a convergence of litigation and consensus-building cultures, resulting in what she calls the new skills, knowledge, and sensitivities of “conflict resolution advocacy.”

She comes with a great reputation:

"One of our senior, commercial lawyers told me he thought you were the best speaker he had ever heard."

"You had rave reviews (non-stop) in the evaluations and post-conference discussions...your work - and your ability to communicate your findings in such an engaging manner - means so much to those of us in this profession trying to do the best for our clients."

The Master Class

Julie Macfarlane’s style is interactive. Places at the Master Class on 11 June will be limited to around 60. We recommend early registration.  Read the programme for the day.
